How to Dispose of Old Carpets

Carpets are majestic pieces of home décor when laid out the right way. However, over time they start to fade and get damaged. When this happens, many people just take them out and store them in the basement. They then install new carpets. The old carpets are then left to gather dust in the storage area.

The reason behind all of this is because people do not know how to get rid of old carpets.

Well, we are here to help. We are going to show you how to dispose of old carpets properly.

     1. Retailers

Most carpets are usually removed by retailers. Many people ask the people who sell them new carpets to remove the old one for them. Although this is a common thing, as a carpet owner, you need to be very careful. Every retailer has his/her own rules pertaining to such services. Some retailers only take the packaging of the new carpet and the offcuts and refuse the old carpets.

Other retailers offer such services but at a fee. Therefore to avoid any inconveniences with such retailers, make sure you ask them about the coverage and fees for their services beforehand.

There are other retailers who offer such hauling services at no extra cost. As long as you bought a carpet, they will ensure that the old one is removed for free of charge. This is, in fact, a great way of keeping customers and attract more.

     2. Recycling

Over the past few years, pollution levels have been increasing at an alarming rate. That is why recycling facilities have been increasing rapidly. The main aim of such facilities is to take in waste and create new useful items. One type of waste that is recycled by recycling pants is old carpets.

The fact that old carpets can be recycled does not mean all plants accept them. Therefore, you need to confirm with the plant’s staff if they take carpets before delivering it to them. There are many ways of repurposing carpets, and they depend entirely on the type of carpet you have. If you have a plastic one, it is simply broken down to smaller parts. It is these parts that are put together to form a new item.

     3. Take-Back Scheme

You should always remember the place where you bought your carpet. This is integral when you are thinking of getting rid of your carpet once it gets old. Here is why. Many stores have a program known as the take-back scheme. The take-back scheme is an initiative where store owners take back the old/worn out items.

The owners use these items as raw materials of newer items of the same kind (carpet). Store owners are usually strict on rules related to the take-back scheme. Firstly, it is known as a take-back scheme meaning they are taking back what they sold. In essence, they can only receive items that they sold to you, not something you bought elsewhere. That is why you should take note of the place you get a carpet so that you can enjoy such privileges later on.

     4. Give it Away

Another way of getting rid of a carpet you are no longer using is by giving it away. There are many ways of giving on old carpet away. One way of doing so is by placing it outside your house, preferably on the roadside. Next to the old carpet, you can put up a sign that reads “Free.” When a person passing by sees it, he will know that you are giving it away free of charge. Any interested party would then pick it up and go. It’s that easy.

If you have a large social media following, you can use that to your advantage. If you have many Instagram followers, for instance, you can post a picture of the carpet there. You can either use your normal feed or Instagram stories.

Whatever the case, a person can easily reach out, asking for the carpet. You two can then make arrangements and complete the transaction.

Generally storing junk in your house is not a good thing. There are many issues related to keeping old carpets specifically. One, carpets may store a lot of dust which may cause a lot of breathing problems. An old carpet in the basement may also house a lot of rodents who can damage a lot of things.

This is why you should get rid of any carpets not in use. One way of doing so is by giving it away. You can also ask the retailer to haul it away, or you can take it to a recycling facility.
